Fishing Report Holbury Lakes Lockerley 30th May 2013

Harriet & Tracy went to have a look at Holbury Lakes today.  Fish Wives will be meeting there on the 19th June.
Holbury Lakes are a series of four lakes and a stretch of the river Dun. The fishery is very well presented and very fishable with numerous places offering easy casting and some more challenging places which are no problem if you have "got your roll cast right", to quote Mr Thew.

We initially went for a walk around the lakes and to have a look at the lodge where we will be able to have a comfortable lunch.  We saw plenty of fish in the first two lakes which were clear and although the second two lakes were coloured we in fact caught all three fish in the third lake call long lake.

We had a look in the catch record and discovered that Daddies were working well as were nymphs. We both set off with red Montana without success.  Moving on to the second lake Harriet was greatly frustrated by many fish showing great interest in everything she put on the end of her line but nothing taking the fly.  I had great fun with a small grey fly.
Harriet & I both caught our first fish on a yellow head and Harriet had a second fish on a black ant.
Holbury Lakes will make an excellent venue for our next fish wives on the 19th June and probably another day later in the season.

To book onto Holbury Lakes on the 19th of June please contact Tracy at: tracyfishwives@gmail.com

Fish Wives – Fishing Report: Western Court 28th May 2013

Weather:
The weather was warm but rained all day, no wind.
Water:
Not very clear due to rain.
Who Fished:
Christine Ames. Sue Law, Penny Down, Harriet Spain, Lily Wiltshire & Becky Frost (Photographer).
Western Court  is a private, syndicate fishery with three lakes stocked with rainbow trout and a stretch of river stocked with brown trout.  We had a very good, second day here with 10 fish caught between us.
The large well equipped, fishing hut was a safe haven on more than one occasion during the day when the rain drove individuals back from the lakes for a warming cup of coffee and shortbread biscuits. The clean WC was appreciated by all the ladies.
On arrival Tracy opened the fishing hut and put on the coffee, she then put up a couple of rods and coached Lily on the overhead cast to get her going on her first day. Lilly was soon on the top lake with a Red Montana improving her cast all day and hooked several fish before landing two, nice 1.5lb Rainbow trout. Harriet was straight on the lakes and landed two rainbows before lunch.
Even with Polaroid’s there was nothing to see because of the persistent rain. Not heavy, but persistent.  The red Montana was, again, the fly of the day.
Penny & Sue arrived mid morning  donning plenty of wet weather gear, Penny watched Tracy coaching Sue on the overhead cast before they both set off to the middle lake each with a red Montana on their lines. Penny landed one fish before lunch but Sue was not so successful. Christine arrived and tried a green Montana before lunch.  Becky arrived to take photographs of the wet and bedraggled Fish Wives before we all retired for a hot soup and salad. Tracy provided the usual lunch, with sliced cheeses, salami, home cooked ham and hard boiled eggs, coleslaw and a good hot parsnip & lentil soup with home-made bread.  Coffee, tea, orange juice and water were available all day.  There was lemon drizzle cake for tea.
Discarding wet clothes and raiding the heap of spare jumpers and coats Tracy had brought along, everyone, except Penny, who had to leave early, set off after lunch, with mild enthusiasm. Christine took to the red Montana, and had several takes but, unlike her, only landed one fish. Sue, with help from Harriet, landed a nice brown trout from the bottom lake and also had a rainbow.  Harriet landed her third fish and Lilly who had lost several fish landed a nice rainbow on a yellow head. Becky fished on until she landed a fish on the top lake.  Around 4pm we all decided we had had enough and packed in. When, of course, the rain eased.
Everyone agreed it had been a successful day and we were all glad we had made the effort to get there in spite of the rain.
Many thanks to Toby Coles  for permitting us to use Western Court for the day and we look forward to coming back in more clement weather in August.
The next Fish Wives day will be at Holbury Lakes on 19th June.

Fish Wives – Fishing Report: Western Court 15th May 2013

Weather:
The weather was overcast, with a few heavy showers, a little wind at times.
Water:
Not very clear but we did see fish in all three lakes.
Who Fished:
Becky Frost (Photographer) Teta Crowe & Tracy
Western Court is another good fishery for ladies.  They have a large well equipped fishing hut with outside bbq and table and there is a WC .
Fish Wives – Ladies who like to go Fly Fishing
On arrival Becky and Tracy had a cup of coffee and biscuits, then walked around the three lakes.  With Polaroid’s on we saw fish in all the three lakes and several families of geese with goslings of different ages.  It was cold and we had to wrap up well but we set to with a one to one lesson on the top lake in front of the fishing hut.  Becky grasped the basics of the roll cast and improved here overhead cast.    We began fishing on the middle lake with Becky using a Green Montana and Tracy a Red Montana which proved to be the fly of the day. Tracy hooked two fish in quick succession, handing the rod to Becky to play the first fish, the second fish Becky landed with the net, all good learning.  Exchanging rods, Becky was soon into her first fish with the Red Montana.  She successfully played the fish until it tired then landed it.  At that time Teta arrived and took over Tracy’s rod.  A quick lesson to improve the overhead cast and Teta was fishing. Becky caught her second fish and then moved onto the bottom lake, where she caught her third fish.  Teta took over the killer Red Montana and after hooking a tree, was into her first fish, which she landed and despatched herself.  Very soon afterwards Teta landed her second fish and as Tracy had also taken a third fish, we decided to retire for for lunch. Tracy provided the usual salad for lunch, with sliced cheeses, salami, home cooked ham and hard boiled eggs, coleslaw and a good hot mushroom soup with home-made bread.  Coffee, tea, orange juice and water were available all day.  There was a lemon drizzle cake eaten for desert as we were not going to be there for tea. Tracy forgot the plates but we managed!
Following lunch Teta was challenged to catch a 6lb fish out of the top lake.  She landed a very nice 2.5lb fish which completed our bag for the day.  All fish were good specimens with no damage and weighed about one and a half to two pounds.
Many thanks to Toby Coles, for permitting us to use Western Court for the day and look forward to the 28th May when we will be back with more Fish Wives.

River Anton September

I have the opportunity of a days fishing on the river Anton at Westfair in early September.  The cost will be £150.00 per rod and we would need four rods.   There will be two guides on the day so this would be a good opportunity for ladies who have never fished a river.

Westfair is a beat of the Anton which is a tributary of the Test and is typical of the upper Test where the river meanders through peaceful,  water meadows of the Hampshire countryside.  The beat has the use of the well equipped fishing hut including a barbeque
Westfair is split into three double banked beats in total just over one mile of fishing. The river is well stocked with brown trout and has a wonderful head of grayling.
The Anton is a typical chalkstream, the water is gin clear  the well kept banks allow you to stalk individual trout as they rise to the abundant dry flies. The excellent fly life and weed growth compliment the fishing making every day an enjoyable experience.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to take a rod.
I look forward to hearing from you soon

Fish Wives – For ladies who do and those who would like to... go fly fishing

Fishing Report:   Meon Springs 24th April 2013
Weather:
The weather was warm but not sunny, with a little wind at times.
Water:
Clear with some weed. Plenty of fish could be seen.
Who Fished: five including Tracy.
Becky Frost (Photographer) Penny Down, Teta Crowe & Christine Ames.
Meon Springs is a good fishery for ladies.  They have a comfortable fishing lodge with WC and offer free coffee and tea if you are fishing. They have a small shop, selling equipment and clothing.  They have a very knowledgeable manger on site and there always seems to be a few people around, so you are never totally alone.
The day started with coffee and biscuits as people arrived, then we had a walk around one of the lakes. Those who were wearing Polaroid glasses saw lots of fish.
We then went through the practical exercise with those who had never fished before. Putting together the outfits (rod and line).  Tracy took the novices onto one of the lawns, for a quick lesson in casting.  Then we were on the banks with hooks on our leaders, fishing.
Keith advised us to fish on the top lake using small black gnats.  This was good advice as everyone had fish on their line.  Becky landed her first ever fish before lunch.  Christine, due to pressure of work, arrived late morning and was straight into her first fish.  She was a star, landing two good fish on a difficult day.
Lunch was relaxed,  out on the decking at the front of the fishing lodge.  We had tea with lemon drizzle cake at four o’clock.  In fact it was so relaxed we forgot to take photographs.  There will be a next time.
Thank you ladies for a very good day.
